SAN PELLEGRINO CHURCH

HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION

The church, which today retains little of its original appearance, is one of the oldest monuments still preserved in the city. It is mentioned for the first time in an act of 1045, which described it runned by the monks of Farfa and subjected to the jurisdiction of the Abbey of S. Martino al Cimino. In 1889 Bishop Antonio Maria Grasselli ordered the reconstruction of the façade: Today, an arch supported by half- pillars (probably the result of an arbitrary non- interference of the original façade dating back to the asset) frames the entire façade, composed by the portal, delimited by a round arch supported by pillars ending in leafy capitals, and a rose window. The medieval structure, altered over the centuries and almost completely destroyed by the bombings of World War II, has only certain sections of the original exterior walls. The interior has a nave and ceiling trusses, with traces of frescoes from 400 and 700, while the presbytery was rebuilt after 1945 in modern forms. The altarpiece (1979) is a copy of S. Pellegrino e Angeli di Vincenzo Strigelli (eighteenth century) which was destroyed during the bombing. The only work worth mentioning is an Annunciation, dating from the fifteenth century, placed in the second niche on the left wall.
