FOUNTAIN OF PIAZZA DELLA ROCCA

HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION

During the Middle Ages the fountain was known as San Pietro alla Rocca. It underwent its first restoration in the second half of the fifteenth century, and a seven-foot-long pool was added. In the following century, under the patronage of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, the existing structure was replaced with a new work. In order to realize this new project, artists and sculptors working in other cities were called upon. In 1576, Vignola’s was chosen among the many other projects. In that period, he was working on the construction of the Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola. The new fountain, supported by a base composed of eight sides, four with steps and the other four with overlapping basins. It appeared formed by three tanks, one of which is octagonal and two circular. Once completed, the entire structure began to show the first signs of weakness (attributed to the work done by stonemason Paolo Cenni). It was thanks to the architect Giovanni Malanca and Antonio di Pietro as well as his sons, Cesare and Diomede who established and restored the fountain. They strengthened the structure in accordance to the original plan of Vignola.
